On the 22nd of May 2018, the John Cain Foundation held an interactive event as we embarked on our first free “Politics in the Pub” Q&A event of 2018 to discuss key issues facing young people in Australia today and potential solutions. Young people today face significant issues in a rapidly changing economy, including lack of housing affordability, an insecure labour market, inadequate and punitive social security and increasing levels of educational debts.

Dr Josh Healy from Melbourne University discussed young people and the labour market, especially casual employment and the rise of the gig economy. Jack Kenchington-Evans from Interns Australia talked about the issue of internships and the new union Hospo Voice for hospitality workers. Associate Prof Wendy Stone presented on the decline of home ownership for young people. The speakers then fielded many great questions.
